Dandar's closed Dec. 24- Dec. 28

Happy Holidays everyone! We loved seeing you all come out and support our small business this season. We’re going to recharge with a few family days. Playing board games and reading will surely be involved. We will be back to our usual open hours starting Friday, Dec 29.

Dan Gilkey
CATAN The Official Cookbook review

Any fan of the classic board game Catan will enjoy the official Catan Cookbook.  Every recipe is named in reference to the game with abundant puns. The recipes are divided into five parts: snacks, small meals, main courses, desserts, and even a selection of drinks. The book is organized logically and easy to read. There are symbols (hexagons of course) to tell you with a quick glance what dietary restriction the recipes follow. Every recipe is accompanied by a beautiful photo (a little too beautiful, to be honest).

Close up of a hand holding a pillowy little pretzel bite dripping with rich yellow cheese sauce over a white crock of the same sauce.

Looks easy enough… I think I’ve seen those pretzel bites somewhere before though.

I decided to try out a simple appetizer- Tavern Pretzel Bites and Beer Cheese.  I was intrigued by this one because it seemed simple enough, but involved something I had never tried and something that had never quite turned out right.  I’ve never made any kind of boiled bread before. I didn’t even know pretzels were in that category! They have you start with pre-made pizza dough. So simple and clever! But, the instructions do leave a little bit to be desired, ultimately.  The pretzel bites I made didn’t look anything like the tidy little ones in the picture.

Trust in the process, trust in the process…

They did taste pretty good, though.  But, as I looked closer, the ones in the picture look suspiciously like ones I’ve seen in tubs at the grocery store.  Mine did not.  But they were very tasty! I just feel like if I had more experience with boiling dough I can make them more presentable.  The instructions in this pretzel recipe aren’t going to lead you to cute little pillow shaped pretzel bites.  You’ll have to practice and experiment to get there.  But, the flavor was great! The texture turned out a little soft and rubbery.   I do want to try them again.  I thought the recipe was going to be easy, but it may not be great for a beginner cook.

Nailed It!

The beer cheese sauce turned out great!  I did buy a cheap beer, and that cheapness came through in the flavor, but otherwise it was quite tasty.  The texture came out smooth and creamy. It even kept surprisingly well. I found several ways to use the leftovers.  Unlike the pretzel recipe, the cheese sauce one included important tips for success. Now I know why my previous attempts at cheese sauce never impressed me, I let it get too hot!

Based on this experience, I will definitely be trying other recipes.  I’ll just keep in mind that there may be assumptions baked into the instructions.  Overall a fun cookbook for board game enthusiasts in general, and Catan fans especially.

Catan: the Official Cookbook will join our other themed cookbooks in the book room by the holiday season.

BUSY SUMMER and BEYOND

We’ve been working diligently to fill our calendar up with events for the year.

The highly anticipated Forest Moon Festival is happening June 2-3, with events taking place all over Del Norte and Humboldt counties.  We’ll be participating with 20% off everything in our store that’s part of the Star Wars franchise- games, books, and RPGs. Show off your favorite space fantasy costume just for the fun of it!

https://forestmoonfestival.org/index.html

Humboldt County Library is hosting Board Game Night for Grown Ups on the fourth Wednesday of each month. We brought games and demonstrated “Canvas” at the first one last week. The event had a strong start and  we’ll bring a game library and demo a different game at each one.

https://humboldtgov.org/EurekaLibrary

June 10 is the next installment of our monthly  Game Night series taking place at the D Street Neighborhood Center in Arcata.  Our Game Library will be available to peruse and there’s plenty of room for your gaming preference- whether you play board games, collectable card games, miniature war games or role playing games. You can even bring your miniatures and paints  to work at a table.
We’ll have a Community Game Night once a month through November.  The dates (all Staurdays) are:

June 10

July 15

August 19

September 2

October 14

November 11

June 17 will be our second TTRPG Social.  This is an in-store event starting at 4pm where you can meet potential GMs and Adventurers for your next TTRPG campaign.  Come early (3 pm) if you are new to RPGs and would like a character creation walkthrough.  Dar will have character sheets, a Player’s Handbook, dice and pointers to help you roll up a D&D 5e character so you can see what the fuss is all about.

Edward Gorey

Edward Gorey (1925-2000) was a notable American artist and author most widely known for his macabre humor taking place in Edwardian settings.  People of a certain age can easily recall the haunted cries of his damsel in distress during the opening of Boston Public Television’s Mystery! series. You can find his illustrated short story collections, alphabet book, and his version of an oracle deck on our shelves.

As an exciting bonus, this weekend you can also enjoy a live performance adaptation of one of his stories, The Unstrung Harp at Synapsis in Eureka.

The “unspeakable horror of the literary life” is relatable to anyone who has embarked on any creative endeavor.  Kathryn Cesarz’s dramatic adaptation of Edward Gorey’s “The Unstrung Harp” embarks on its own creative, comedic, and heartful journey that is well worth an audience ride-along. It starts with James Peck’s dynamic and captivating narration of Gorey’s text. Jesse March is the embodiment of an Edward Gorey character to a startling degree. Every emotion Mr. Earbrass goes through is clear and authentic while keeping up the intensity of caricature. The costumes are exaggerated but simple; comedic, classic and an enhancement to the actors’ performance. The minimalist set allows the focus to be where it should be- on the actors dramatizing the narration. The lighting and sound transposed over the physical comedy helps tell the story by letting the audience know mood changes and emotional nuance that might otherwise be overlooked.  Shadow puppets are otherworldly and mildly unsettling, but an excellent interlude to what is otherwise mostly one person exaggerating across the stage.  This short play is hosted at the charming Synapsis venue; a converted church where every performance is wonderfully intimate.  The Synapsis collective is community art worth supporting.

Dealing with Covid-19

Whle we are all told to spend more time at home it is important to have a variety of things to do to keep ourselves entertained. To that end we at Dandar’s are working to stay open to the extent possible. As it stands now we are able to operate only as a curbside service. Please reach out to us by phone, email, or social media and we will help you finding the games or books you would like and then arrange to meet you at the curb with your purchases.

Here is a list of games we have in stock as I write this. I am afraid I don’t currently have a convent way to list our books but I will take this chance to remind you that you can purchase books from us online HERE and have them shipped straight to your home.

Snapdragon a graphic novel review

The graphic novel Snapdragon by Kat Leyh combines complex characters and simple illustrations to create an ultimately warm and hopeful story.  The titular character Snap needs a favor of the supposed town witch. Jacks is willing to do it in exchange for Snap helping with her work- which involves road-kill.  This unlikely duo will come to find they have much more in common than they could imagine.

Everyone loves a shook-up trope, and Kat Leyh shakes them all. Snap is a skeptical, brash, and short tempered girl whose knack for seeing things as they really are allows her to also be the very best sort of friend.  Jacks seems to be a crotchety old spinster hiding behind scary rumors, but she is sincere and authentic, with a surprisingly adventurous past and hopeful future. Like any worthwhile maiden-crone relationship, they help each other learn, grow, and change for the better.

This story has a very diverse cast of characters dealing with real- world, very relatable problems.  If you’ve ever had to share a room, juggle work, school and parenting, or just felt like the outsider, you’ll find yourself in one of these characters.  And even if you don’t relate directly with their struggles, you will definitely have a chance to care about them. This story deals with same-sex relationships as well as non-binary and trans identities in age-appropriate, kind, and matter of fact ways.  Snapdragon is full of supportive family and accepting friends, which I find to be a great comfort.

I also appreciate the graphic style and arrangement.  I generally have difficulty reading graphic novels- there is too much happening on a page and I can’t make out what’s important, or which order I’m supposed to read the panels. Kat Leyh illustrates her story in a way that is rich in color, helpful in context, and simple enough to not distract or confuse this middle aged reviewer.  I enjoy Snapdragon immensely, and re-read it regularly.

The publisher, MacMillan, puts this graphic novel in the 10-14 year age range.  I’ve seen another review describe it as all-ages, which I think is true.

Game Day Saturday October 12th - Focus on Ceylon and Until Daylight

Saturday Game Day

Focus on Ceylon and Until Daylight

October 12th between 11am and 6pm

Ceylon

During the second half of the nineteenth century in what was then Ceylon, today known to all as the nation of Sri Lanka, a deadly fungus killed off all the coffee plantations on the island thus causing a serious economic crisis. The Scot James Taylor, and later many other entrepreneurs, set about substituting tea plantations for coffee plantations and hence creating what many connoisseurs today consider to be the best tea in the world.

In Ceylon, players take on the role of the pioneers who developed the Ceylon tea industry. As such, they build plantations in different districts and at different altitudes. They produce tea and try to sell it to the most important export companies. To favor this task, they must win the favor of the counselors of each district and develop the necessary technology that allows them to get ahead of their competitors.

At the end of the game, players score points for having plantations in each district, for meeting demands that have been set, for the level of technological development reached, and for the amount of money collected. In the end, the player who has the most points wins.

Until Daylight

Until Daylight is a co-operative survival card game. Your goal: Survive ten waves of enemies and save at least one survivor.

During the game, you can find and exchange objects, weapons, and ammunition with other characters and build traps or barricades to protect yourself and ensure your survival as a group. Your reflexes, your sense of strategy, and your ability to survive will be tested. Every character you may embody is unique and has its advantage and drawback that will enhance the game with strong and intense moments. "Search, fight, survive" will quickly become your motto.

Your first games should be difficult, and you will probably die. Don't worry — it's normal because surviving the apocalypse is anything but easy. Every attempt will teach you a little more about the game mechanisms and strategic priorities. Until Daylight is a game in which every action counts and where time will be very cruel. In some phases you will have only a few seconds to react before the horde falls on you. You win the game if the following three conditions are met:

All characters survived the ten rounds of the game.

All enemies revealed in the game were eliminated.

The group saved at least one survivor.

Until Daylight is a co-operative game, but of course players might disagree on which strategy to adopt. In these circumstances, the group leader decides which action will be carried out for the party. The player with the most experience points is the group leader.
